Some rather small - but not insignificant -news

Well a number of you may know, and some may not, but it's one of those things that are a little bit exciting, but when you go to actually tell people - you feel like a bit of a dick.

There is no easy or cool way to do it really, so you might as well get serious and formal withit.

I am baking a bun in my oven.

Damn. Not serious.

I have 8 centimetres of a Dather (Dave + Heather) being growing in my womb.

Yes: Pregnant.

Facts: 14 weeks (i think down), Due December 1, Gender unknown until D-Day, birth will be performed over here in London. Was not planned for, but it is a as welcome and happy surprise as it would be if we had planned it to minute detail.

In the last week I have developed this bit of belly that sticks out at a weird angle and my thighs and bum have 'thickened' and I am going to use and abuse the advantage of having control over this website, by only ever posting skinny pictures of myself.
All is well. Been pretty sick for the past month or so, but that should be clearing up soon. I am constantly tired and walking up a small flight of stairs has me huffing and puffing. This does not mean that I'm unfit, but rather that my body is working harder than it ever has before in creating the limbs, organs and toenails of another living creature. It is quite incredible what is happening inside of me.

We went to our first scan last week and got to see the picture of little Dather. It was surprisingly moving and the first time since we found out - it actually seemed ‘real’.

Its quite a nerve-racking telling people that this is a situation which you find yourself in. The sentence ‘Im pregnant’ is somewhat embarrassing to utter.

Plus it is quite nerve-racking waiting for the response. I know it shouldn’t matter what people think, and I wish I was a stronger person who lived by that ethos. But due to my age and people’s perception of me being ‘career oriented’ - there is a tendency to assume that this is an accident that we never spoke about eventuating (wrong: it was a top 5 topic of ours, but the plan was for it to happen a year down the track). Plus people can’t help but put themselves in my shoes and decide what is wrong and what is right based on a limited view of the real circumstances.

Hmmm. I’m not too sure why I wrote that above as it gives the impression that people have been negative – and this is not the case at all. On the whole people have been really positive with a few being ridiculously happy. I guess that there are a few people that the reaction has been less than impressive and with my pessimistic tendencies I will dwell on these more than I think about the joy that I am giving Kelly by joining the ‘mothers group’. And to be fair – chances are that I have too high expectations and am being selfish by not realising that there are other, more important things taking their focus elsewhere (who knows? I too have a ‘limited view of the real circumstances’).

However on the whole, friends are being smashingly lovely (and all suggesting their own names as potential baby names) and the Anders family has kicked into a surprisingly high gear over the news with a number of the women commencing knitting. I believe that a few pairs of booties and a cardigan have already been created.

What else? Taking it pretty easy – no reading too much into it – just mostly trusting my body. The hospital looks fine (which was a worry with eh state of the NHS over here in the UK). My hormones are ridiculously all over the place and I have taken to growling at Dave (which sometimes is quite fnny, sometimes not).

Mostly I am looking forward to the fact that in 2 weeks from now, Olivia and I will be on a plane on our way to Paris and then a week later in sunny, glorious Greece….

Nothing in Particular

Every day, during the internet-time I put aside for myself, I always have a look at Georgia + Pete's blog as well as Mez's. And from there I habitually click the link back to this little blog. Why? I'm not too sure to be honest, because it is not like this website is going to disappear or that anyone else will make changes to it. And I always find myself somewhat disappointed that there is not a new entry. Which - I know, I know – is pretty stupid, as it is not logical that I should experience any sort of anticipation as to ‘ohhh. What could be on there today….’

And yet I do.

Sometimes I just wish someone else wrote for me and I could be pleasantly surprised by my witty thoughts each day.

Why begin the entry like this? Well, basically to excuse the fact I don’t have anything interesting to say, and to explain why it is necessary for me to put SOMETHING new on here. I'm boring myself stupid.

So we are going to go with a few random things I have thought of lately, in no particular order

• The Blog turned a year old nearly 2 months ago and I didn’t celebrate it. Not that it would notice or feel annoyed by the lack of recognition, but a simple little ‘Happy Birthday Mr. Blog’ would have been nice. Sorry Mr. Blog. I promise a party this time next year.
• It appears that the ‘Mr. Man Manderson’ photo is a big favourite on the website as I have had lots of feedback on that one. You people are sick
• Been madly planning Trip to France (Paris and Champagne) and Greece (Athens, Milos and Santorini) with Olivia which is due to kick-off on the 16th of June. It all is very, very exciting and we have decided to splash out and stay at a really luxurious place in Santorini. I will no doubt be posting lots of photos of me sitting in the glorious sun, sipping a cocktail in an infinity pool that overlooks the volcanoes crater in the middle of the Mediterranean.
• That was an exaggeration, but regardless, you will be jealous
• It was 25 degrees here the other day and HOT
• Crows are doing magnificently, which is the highlight of my Monday mornings.
• I wonder when the next Harry Potter is coming out. It was around this time last year, so maybe another year from now. Hopefully Rowling brings back all my favourite characters she killed-off over the past few books. Bitch.
• New season of Tiny Tearaways began last week. (Only Georgia will find this interesting). Pretty good stuff. Seeing a lot of ‘Kissing the apple’ and Rapid Return (genius). One kid got rapid returned 294 times in one night! But that was cos she was 4, and the parent never dealt with it. If my children have eating or sleeping problems, after hours and hours of my Tanya training, it will be a breeze to deal with. Not that they will ever get to that stage because the fundamental fact you learn from Tanya on day 1 is that behavioural problems in children are more than likely a result of the parents’ behaviour. And I am going to be purrrrr-fect. This week we have a boy with selective mutism, which is new.
• This week British big brother starts, which I not am looking forward to as it takes over EVERYTHIGN from three channels to all conversation. There is something quite hideous about the lengths that the slappers and the chavs will go to be famous in this country and last year they put a group of the most horrible, self-centred, show ponies I have ever seen. All incredibly loud and trying to steal the limelight. It was offensive that at the end one of them got £100,00 and the ego boost that the country thought they were cool.
• Dave bought me a Donna Hay cookbook I didn’t have the other day and I made a pasta dish out of it, which was incredible.
• Still reading John Banville’s The Sea. For such a short novel, it has taken me a world record time. Admittedly took to reading Paris and Greek Island Lonely Planets for a couple of weeks, which no doubt has extended the hell which is reading this book (although I must admit, I am starting to really like it).
• Can’t put any photos on here for a while as Dave’s computer has died (again) and it is in the shop.
• Oh. This is good. Dave and I went out on a proper date the other night. Dinner and a movie. Well, Movie and a Dinner. We saw ‘the Squid and the Whale’ which we both really liked and then went for the best Chinese ever in Chinatown. It was a really nice night and Dave impressed me by his insight into interpreting a rather unclear moving ending. It was quite impressive, and I will need to re-think his position on the ‘Fool Pedestal’. Maybe. He actually seems to be quite good with movies that are ambiguous, much more impressive than me – I have taken to shrugging my shoulders and not even attempting to dissect. Mind you, he is limited by the fact that if the movie is longer than 90 minutes, he will fall asleep.
• Feeling quite happy that Tom Cruise’s latest film did poorly at the box office. Never really got what was so good about him, and as of lately he has become incredibly annoying. Plus he is such a crap actor (besides that scene in Rain Man when he awkwardly tries to hug his brother)

That’s enough for today. Goodbye.

Mez Does Blog

Well, it began as something of a laugh - the idea of Mez creating and maintaining a website was a little bit too far-fetched to believe. But it was awfully amusing when the witty author realised that he/she could write what the hell they liked and pretend that Mez wrote it. By false entries amongst genuine Mez emails, it baffled the masses as to whether it was true or whether it was a hoax. And as to whether Mez was maybe a little bit obsessed with Heather.

However, whatever the answer to that question was - it is now definately something something from the hand of Mez. So treat yourself - catch up on all the latest action and crazy goings on as Mez tries to fit in in the year she will spend in Japan

You're Joking, Umpire!!

Today I discovered that a number (13!!) of comments had been entered onto my website. WELL, I thought, haven't my friends scome out in force over the weekend to lend a bit of support)))

Apparently not.

It appears that Blogs are the latest area of the internet to be inundated with SPAM. Not content with filling my hotmail inbox with offers for dental plans, health insurance or information to improve my sex life - today I discovered 13 'Comments' by some twat offering university degrees.

I am outraged. To think that some idiot has the time to go through my little website and strategically place incentives for my friends to get degrees. Not only do I 'pity the fool' for his splendid waste of his life, but I am astounded that he thinks that his offer is going to peak anyone's interest. SPAM is abhorrent, moving to new forums only compounds this.

Luckily I was able to find 12 of the 13 entries (I get an email each time one is made so I know how many there are) and erase them. If anyone happens to find the final one, please tell me. I only have so much patience.

Plus I have had to make things more secure. This means that anyone wanting to leave a comment will have to do one of those 'word verification' things which require you to repeat the random letters you see in a picture. If this doesnt work, the next step will be complete moderation, where any comments made will have to be screened by me. I am loathe to take this step as I quite like the surprise of the comment, but thems the breaks.

Boo Spam people.

Note: I also find it quite frustrating that the people of google have not set up an email address/website where you can go and report these people, so they are unable to continue doign it from the same website.

It is Tuesday Evening.

Well, it's Tuesday evening and I have decided to write something in my blog because poor little Georgia has sent me an email bemoaning the jet lag that has ruled her life since she returned to Adelaide. Being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 4 in the morning is not conducive to much beyond a bit of internet surfing, and she tells me that she checks this site up to 15 times a night waiting for something new (full-well knowing that me adding somehting is a bi-monthly occurance). And seeing as she is this website's most dedicated patron, it is only fair that she gets an entry in her honour.

I thought about writing a suggestion to our Adelaide friends that they call her, but then, as both Georgia and I know, none of them actually read our websites. Ohhh…. Except Nadine. Nadine – please call (email might work even better) Georgia and harass her to catch up. She is a hermit and needs cajoling. Without that, I fear you all might see me before you see her.

So how are things here? Well, boringly the same. I have a bit of a cold at the moment which means that I am coughing up extraordinary quantities of nasties in the morning. Bet you are all glad you read that.

What else? Umm. A few ‘Current Events’ might be a good idea

- I’m attempting to read this year’s Booker Prize winner, John Banville’s ‘The Sea’ but find myself struggling through a slow plot and forcedly-floral sentences.

-Tonight I’m watching the European Cup Final of Villareal versus Aresenal. I’m a bit torn over this one as I hate Aresenal, but it would be good to see and English Team win again. My newly adopted football team – Wigan – has finished in the top half od the league even though this is the first season they have played in the Premiership (for those who don’t understand what this mean, just interpret it as ver, very impressive). And I have just realised that the coach’s name is (oh, Pete – we adopted this team for their delightful name, and it just gets better…) ‘Paul Jewell’ Seriously. That is a ten out of ten name.

-I started to learn the piano.

-Dave bought me the complete Ripping Yarns dvd the other day which is just smashing

-I’m not learning the piano. That was a lie.

Dear god I’m struggling here. I promise that very soon I’m going to have something very interesting happen in my life, and you, dear world of the web, will be the FIRST to know.

Over and out.

Nadine. Email. Georgia. Now.

A Recommendation (Sorry. I normally don't do this)

Last night, when Dave was out enjoying a meal at the Jamieson's place and I was curled up on the couch attempting to keep down chicken soup, I happened across the most incredible documentary.

Perhaps you have seen it, perhaps you have heard of it: It's called 'Born into Brothels' and it won the doco oscar in 2004. This fact I did not realise till just then as I was 'surfing' the net to try and find everything I could about the incredible show I watched last night.

I'm not too sure why I watched it. I think perhaps someone had once mentioned wanting to see it once, but I can not remember who. But as soon as I watched one minute of it, there was no way I was changing channels or going to bed. It's a BBC funded doco which is essentially about an American photographer living in Calcutta, who tries to educate the children of prostitutes by getting them to take photographs of their environment. I won't go into too much as that would ruin it, but their stories are incredible, their photos actually really good and.... well.... it’s just so moving. India is the most chaotic place I can think of, and you are thrown into the dark heart of one of its largest city's red-light districts and you see the circumstances that these beautiful children simply accept. Needless to say, being the sop that I am and the mood I was in when I watched this last night, meant that I had a few teary moments. But these tears were for both incredibly sad moments and truly inspiring ones There is a scene when the children are driven in a bus all day so that they can see the ocean for the first time. It’s pretty special. But this is not only an incredibly emotional film, it is also so very interesting. There are a million aspects to India, and I enjoy being able to see one with such clarity.

Anyway - I've gone on enough - I only meant to say that I something I thoroughly enjoyed last night, and if you get the chance to watch it - drop everything - it's the best 1 1/2 hours of film you will see in a long time.
